Pre-Ride Inspection
T-CLOCS
  1. Tires (30-40 PSI) / Air pressure, tread, cracked sidewalls, dented wheels, loose spokes
  2. Controls / Levers and pedals, cables, hoses, throttle
  3. Lights & Electrics / Headlight, Taillights and brake lights, turn signals, switches, mirrors
  4. Oil & Other Fluids / Levels and leaks
  5. Chassis / Suspension, Chain, belt or drive shaft
  6. Stand
 
Engine Pre-Start Routine
FINE-C
  1. Fuel (Valve On)
  2. Ignition (On)
  3. Neutral (Be in Neutral)
  4. Engine (Run / On Position)
  5. Choke / Clutch
 
SEE (When Riding)
  • Search for hazards (Far and Near and Side to Side)
  • Evaluate situation
  • Execute appropriate response
 
REMEMBER...
  • WHEREVER YOUR HEAD GOES, THAT IS WHERE THE BIKE GOES
  • Cover the clutch, Use friction zone
  • Have good posture, Flat wrist on throttle
  • Turning – Slow, Look, Press and Roll
  • Braking to a Stop -  Roll off throttle, squeeze clutch and front brake + rear brake, get to first gear, square the handle bars, and left foot on ground (Right keeps braking).
  • Shifting – Roll, Lift up / Press down, Ease out
  • Have 360 degree awareness
 
 ADDITIONAL...
 When starting bike go from LEFT to RIGHT
  • Stand, Pull in Clutch, Turn on Key, Switch Cut Off Switch to On, Then Start Bike
 
When turning off bike go from RIGHT to LEFT
  • First put in 1st gear, hold in clutch, THEN, hit engine cut off, turn off fuel supply valve (If you have one), then turn off key, put down kick stand, turn handlebars and front wheel all the way to the left
 
Quickly Slowing Down
  • Clutch in + both brakes to quickly slow down
 
Clutch
  • When clutch is in there is no power to rear wheel
 
Counter Steering to Make Turns
  • Slow
  • Look
  • Press – Use handgrip
  • Roll – Use the throttle to slightly increase speed
 
Cornering
  • Search, Set-up & Smooth
 
Braking
  • Keep right leg on rear brake and right hand on front brake
  • Get to first gear by time of stop
  • Use BOTH brakes if need quick stop
 
Upshifting
  • Roll off
  • Lift shift and release
  • Ease out on clutch
 
Downshifting
  • Roll, Shift, Ease…
 
Engine Braking
  • Get in the habit of using the engine to slow down as well
 
Risk Awareness
  • Lane Position 1, 2 & 3
  • Know when to be in each lane position to be best seen by others on road
  • Have a good rider radar (11a to 1p in front of you)
  • Know that your vision cone is only 3 degrees in front of you
  • Have 2 second minimum following distance, but 4 seconds is better.
  • Ideally  4 second following distance and reaction time for intersections and curves
  • Have 12 second anticipation time. Always be thinking about time and distance
  • **4 SECOND RULE ALL OF THE TIME**
  • ** HAVE AN ESCAPE PATH ALL OF THE TIME**
 
Search / Evaluate / Respond
  • Perception distance
  • Reaction distance
  • Braking distance
  • Escape path à Always have ONE or more
 
Intersections pose the biggest problems to bikers, highest chance of getting hit here, followed by curves.
